Hello can you tell me am I doing the right thing with my garden please see my video below and let me know what i should do. Many thanks paul. https://youtu.be/M0Y2JGpPmEw

Yes, it was topsoil pushed up around the edges of the lawn. For filling in any gaps you can add seed to the soil if you wish, but if they are only small this isn't really necessary as the grass will naturally fill in gaps once you start mowing it regularly.

It depends on the quality of your topsoil. If it's a good quality sandy loam, which has been well prepared, then you can apply a pre-turfing fertiliser and lay on this, although spreading a thin layer of topsoil can make it easier to get a level surface. With poorer soils add a soil improver to improve the structure or consider importing new soil. Poor soil will affect the lawn’s appearance so it is important to get the preparation right. Have you seen our video on preparing to lay turf?

i have a patch of soil in front of my place that I want to lay sir walter buffalo turf. Many sources suggest to loosen the soil by 100mm. Once doing so and all the excess weeds etc are out how important is it to lay top soil? Is it really necessary? If I don't lay top soil is there a good chance the turf won't settle into the soil?

It's best to keep off the lawn as much as possible until it is established, which should only be a few weeks or so at this time of year, depending on the growing conditions. It will take light foot traffic now, but for the first few weeks this should only be when you need to eg when mowing. Check out our video on Lawn Aftercare for advice on looking after newly laid turf.

did my first laying turf yey how long do i w8 till i can stand on it dont want to destroye it

Sorry, only just seen your comment. Ideally the soil should be moist but not too wet or it will be difficult to work, but light rain should be okay. An overnight frost won't do the turf any harm, so there's no need to protect it. It is better to let the air get to it, but avoid walking in on it whilst there is dew or frost if you can. Foot traffic should be minimal until the turf has established.

Great vid, thanks. I'm about to order about 800 rolls of Medallion and we're fitting it next week. With the weird weather we're having I have no idea if its going to rain or not. Assuming ok to lay in light rain as long as the top soil doesn't wash away? A few days after laying if a frost is forecast shall I cover the whole thing with tarpaulin sheets?

Hi, both Medallion and Minster Pro Turf are cut to the same dimensions (approx 610x1640mm when harvested) and the rolls in the video would have been the same size. They do look shorter, but I think it's a little difficult to gauge in the video and the presenter is about 6ft 3. You can sometimes get a little bit of shrinkage depending on the conditions, as it's a natural product, but the dimensions are checked regularly during harvesting.

@lowestoftbus we recommend you avoid laying in times of frost, but if already laid it's best to avoid walking on the turf (or any lawn) when covered in frost or snow, as the grass will damage more easily. Newly laid turf that has snow and ice on it will usually recover the following spring. When conditions are severe more extensive remedial work may be required in spring to repair any damage caused.
