Hi Marshall86.. I can understand the movement you may experience with sandy loam soil, if it does become sodden it sounds like it may be the best idea not to walk on it until its dried out. Yes if you re turf you'll have a flat lawn but it sounds like what happens after that and how you look after it is the key. hope that helps, sorry I cant help more without actually seeing all the elements to it. Many thanks.

My lawn is in an exposed coastal area with a sandy loam. It is subject to alternative drying out and being sodden during the year. As a result it has become uneven and the grass thin. Will laying a new lawn change this?

Hi Matthew. Glad it's helpful for you. Don't wet the soil before it'll hinder having a good level if you walk on the soil as it will turn to mud. Best is to keep it dry and then once it's laid get the sprinkler on immediately. Leave 3 weeks before walking on it and best to leave it 4 weeks before first cut. You'll do fine, no need to be nervous!

Very helpful! Helping a friend this weekend n a bit nervous bout mucking it up! Does the ground not have to be wet then before laying turf??

Good stuff easy to follow!

Can you walk on fresh laid turf?
-
use planks for standing/kneeling on, as to not unlevel the ground your laying turfing on. dry ground can become uneven just as easily as damp/wet ground.
