How to Keep Deer Out of Your Garden. DIY...easy, fun and cheap!
Tips, Tricks
https://www.youtube.com/user/aquachigger This is how I keep deer out of my garden. It works every year. It is safe for pets and costs almost nothing to install. I live in Western Maryland and we have tons of deer here! The system does work. Just make sure you have the plants far enough inside that the deer can't just lean in and nibble. Also be prepared for a couple incursion attempts in the first few days after you put this up. So maybe install it a few days before you actually put live plants in the ground. Do pay attention to the string as it can become entangled on an animal or bird leg. I use very light weight line so that it will snap if it gets caught on a leg. It's very easy to mend, so please don't use heavy line and keep it up a few feet to avoid cats and dogs.

Great idea and really works. When I hear the cans rattle, I just turn over, smile and go back to sleep! Many thanks for the idea.

what about elk?

I think the best device would be an electronic device (which emits loud ultrasonic sound) triggered by a passive infrared sensors placed to detect the deer.

I have plantings throughout my yard so have employed this technique for several years now. I have strung fishing line so my entire back yard is protected, but it also restricted my movement. To solve the problem I bought three cheap fishing reels ($18 total) and mounted them to stakes so I can reel in the line during the day and rell it out again in the evening. I've been using wind chimes, but will employ the can technique, so I can reclaim my wind chimes. Thanks for the great tip.

What happens when a second deer comes by later in the night? The cans have already fallen off.

You should not use harmful for animal. I understand you want to protect your garden, i have garden also. I just need to make sure my fence is high and strong enough. There's so many ways you can protect your garden. They don't know about stealing, to them it's just another food! I wonder.....Do you really want that fishing line cut through their skin????

I tried this method last year around a young apple tree. It worked really well. This year I will do it again around a larger pear tree that is always victim to the deer. Thank you for posting this.

After 7 years of gardening the deer have found me! I am dumpster diving my own recycle bin for those cat food tins and off to the hardware store for the fishing line. This is just my kind of solution. Thanks and looking forward to those rattling cans tonight.

Thanks Beau. I'll be putting it up today. They've decimated my garden and don't know if the replant will work within the growing season now. First year with a deer problem.

Beau, Please explain how the fishing line (attached to cans) is attached to the bamboo pole. I hear you mention the line passes through a "notch," but it is unclear what the notch is and how the line with cans is attached.

I'll try it this week, I've got an enormous garden and this year the electric fence isn't working like it used to. In lieu of expanding that at the cost of hundreds of dollars I'll try this. Luckily, I've got hundreds of cat food cans waiting to be squashed for recycling. Promise I'll use the 12 lb line. I don't want to hurt them but I need my cabbages and greens. We've got plenty of open field for them to eat so they don't need my garden.
