I learned from a buddy of mine, (a grower for restaurants) another good indicator is when the ears start "drooping" from the stalk

Thanks for this. This info is great. I'm going to try a small bed and see how that works. Do you know if the spray will hurt earth worms. I have a good supply in the soil and i don't want to hurt them but the rest of the critters can leave.

1/2 my corn didn't do good on one side of a block of three rows, on the right side. The didn't get big, and very few of them are making ears, and they are small. This is the beginning of the third month they have been growing. The won't make ears, right? Shouldn't I just pull them up, or will they eventually make ears later? Also, the plants that are doing good have three ears growing on one plant. Should I pull off the bottom ear if it is just now tasseling? It won't make an ear in three weeks will it? thank you -
I'm thinking of planting mine 3 ft apart next year so I can run a tiller down between the rows ever so often to weed and bust the dirt up for better air to roots. You see that working? I just don't know how I will tie them. Maybe just weave each row?

Is it easy to manage growing corn?I really love this crop but I just have to buy everytime I need to eat. Hope this piece of advice could help me to supply my all time favorite plant. Thank you for letting me know this great information.

how long does it take from seed to harvest with corn?
-
Sounds like you should have enough time, at least for the beans and corn. Once October rolls around here it's about the end of it.
-
Thanks! I'm doing a bit of square foot gardening this season.
-
Try square foot gardening, you can get 16 plants per square. That a lot of corn in a small space.
-
Some people eat corn smut. I've yet to try it myself.
-
The nice thing about corn is you can really pack it in to small spaces. I'm doing the three sisters method this year and have about a 25 by 25 foot area for the corn, beans, and squash.

Thanks Peter, take your time. :) I'm finally getting a chance to do some catching up myself.

What is the difference between field corn and sweet? I thought field corn was what was left to get dry and hard, not for eating fresh? thanks!

hi, thanks for the information. I may experiment with different varieties next season. The reason I was thinking to space the rows 3 feet instead of 2-1/2 was that the ears in the center rows not near the end seemed smaller than those on the outside. Turns out a lot of this patch of corn got hit with corn smut. I ended up with 40-50 ears out of what would have been about 100. There is still more on that are young, but i don't know if they will produce anything. Thanks again.

thanks Allen, I did two double rows with the other patch and it worked good too. Thanks for stopping in.,
