How to Grow Your Own Organic Tobacco
Tips, Tricks
You can get my seeds on eBay as well: http://www.ebay.com/usr/ernies.garden http://www.smokesforfree.com for more growing info, pictures, tips and great seeds. I'm a great believer in growing your own tobacco, saving big bucks, avoiding added chemicals and enjoying my own naturally grown cigs when I feel like having one. The tobacco grown from my seed stock have become acclimated to North American growing conditions and thus grow very well now, sprout easily and ripen somewhat earlier than seeds from hotter climates. It's pretty cool to roll your own smokes, I really can't believe what it costs you these days to buy a package of smokes ... it's ridiculous! Mostly government taxes no doubt. Please check out my site for some more tobacco growing info and if you need some fresh seeds, I'm the man! Thanks very much for taking a look. My website is http://www.smokesforfree.com as if you can't tell from my pictures! :P If you have any tobacco related questions, just ask and I'll answer best I can.

What varieties do you grow for cigarettes, and how long before transplanting did you start them indoors? I've stated around 100 plants of Black Sea Samsun, Virginia Gold, and Golden Burley. I'm shooting for a decent cigarette rolling tobacco as well as some for pipe smoking. Do you air cure all of yours?

I have a few questions if you could help me out. When is the best time to start plating and harvest, and when they are outside is there a certain type of climate they have to be grown in? How often do I have to water it? Thanks!

Nicotine doesn't cause cancer, it's the tar in the cigarette that causes lung disease and cancer. All these cases of people getting cancer from second-hand smoke are bogus, it's been medically proven that you can't catch it from second-hand smoke, sure you could get addicted via the nicotine in the air and it's not a pleasant smell but the tar doesn't float. Also near on every chemical in the world "could" cause cancer.
-
Nicotine is found in every form of tobacco as it's the plant's natural defense mechanism. Nicotine causes cancer.

@123drue Sorry, I missed your message, been a while since I checked this vid ... I've read that in 1994 a list of 599 additives were submitted by 4 big tobacco companies to the U.S. Dept of Health and Human services ... 600 additives, I think it's a pretty safe bet to assume homegrown organic tobacco is not as nasty as commercial ... but of course I can't state that it is. Just an educated guess.

@MarkfromLodi Thanks very much, I'll get your order out right away. I'm in zone 6a and I start my seedlings in early April. Of course, I'm sure frost isn't an issue in your grow zone in California, tobacco is ready to harvest 2 - 3 months after transplant, it grows like a weed and is relatively easy to grow. The trickiest part is getting them going well in the beginning as the seeds are so very tiny. It's normal to get 3 - 4 ounces or more of dried tobacco per plant.

I just ordered mine! I'm sure I'll have questions. I'm in the central valley of California, some of the best soil in the world. Will there be climate information? Do you have yield information? I'm a good veg. gardener, so this will be an adventure for me.

I herd that its only the processing off tobacco with all the chemicals which gives you cancer, do you know if this true?

@kenny2498 I use a natural mixture I make myself of fish meal, soy bean meal and wood ash ... it grows like crazy with my homemade fertilizer. I don't use commercial chemical fertilizers. I also till lots of leaves I collect every fall into the soil. I do have sandy soil here though. If you want to use something commercially available, I would just google "tobacco fertilizer".
