Pretty much any organic material is good... you can pull a little mulch up and place trimmings and such under it.... they will rot in as the worms feast on them. The idea with organics is to 'feed the soil, not the plants'. In time your soil will get richer and better. Tilth, fertility, drainage, all will be improved. You can save costs by getting your manure from a local stable, and composting it at home. To start off you need a lot...so do it right and cheaply with bulk loads.
