How To Grow The Best Clover Food Plots
Tips, Tricks
Clover can be a great addition to any wildlife manager's tool bag in providing quality forage and hunting areas. Watch right here to find out everything we do to keep clover in our food plots for years to come! If you think mowing is the key -- you'll think differently after watching this video. The steps used here at The Proving Grounds have kept a clover food plot going strong for 11 (eleven) years! Also, we do a little scouting and find a new location to put up our Hot Zone fence to make a killer spot this fall! Is there a product known as the clover deer trap? And if it exists is it legal to use for hunting?

Very good production. I wish my property was not so over grown and more accessibe. The two acres around the house does draw a good bit of game. ROM 1:25

When do you plant a clover food plot
-
Would a food plot with turnips on the outside and clover, wheat, peas, and oats be good and help hold the deer? Thanks!!
-
ok I'm confusticated. I was told plant clover to MAKE the soil fertilized, full of nitrogen and organic material. Am I in the wrong video?

dont the herbicides get into the meat of the deer that eat the clover ?
-
Thanks for the video on the food plot. By the way, did you eat that bobcat or are you just a redneck killer?

I agree with you – I’d worry about the plots failing due to too much water. No forage crop that I know of does well in standing water. Clover is a good option for moist soils – but not if it’s feet will be in standing water for days at a time.

I use Clethodim to control grass in clover. I follow all instructions on the label, including using a non-ionic surfactant. Clethodim – like most grass-specific herbicides work best when applied when the grass is 4-8″ tall. For the best results, following the instructions on the label! Thanks for watching GrowingDeer.tv!

Thanks for watching! We appreciate the feedback! Our format has always been to show what we are doing and what we use to do it with. What part of the last episode did you find commercial?

Most of the clover I’ve shown this year is a first year stand. I rarely mow clover during the first year of establishment. This is because mowing stresses clover. I want it to become fully established. You are correct that mowing will result in new growth which is more palatable to deer.

Any recommendation on a clover type to use in low lying wet areas? I've found areas on my club that are very open in regards to getting enough sunlight. However, the areas are mostly wet or hold water after rains. I'd love to put in small kill plots in these areas but worry some of what I plant may get to much water.

So you don't mow at all? I have heard that whenever clover has alot of blossoms they have less protein content for the deer that consume them. If you just let you clover keep growing wouldnt it become less palatable? Ive seen deer come into a clover plot and feed in one small circle in the middle where the other deer had been feeding.. maybe that clover that had been browsed heavier had newer growth that was more appealing to them?? I geuss if you had alot of deer you might not need to mow...
