How to grow rose plant cuttings in water updates part 1 of 2 A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek ρόδον rhódon (Aeolic βρόδον wródon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan varəδa, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr.

Make sure to change the water often or it will rot. Don't wait for it to get kinda milky looking or smelly :-)

this is fine, only thing i think the plant gets used to the water. so when planting in soil you have to keep the soil moist atleast for a few days by watering maybe 2 -3 times a day and then wean it off

Nice! what's the best time of the year to start doing it? Also do you think this method will work on roses we buy from flower shops?
-
If its so simple to do, then why are all the bushes and trees you buy ftom Walmart and other big nurseries unable to keep them alive?

When you have the little roots coming out (I have those, with almost all of them), how long do you let it grow before you plant it in earth? this method works for me just fine, thank you so much.

Not sure if this was covered but if you could add a small air stone to the bottles your roots will grow 3x faster the roots need oxygen, rite now you have them in stagnate water. I grow my cutting using this method and in about 10-15 days I have some nice roots. cheers

A friend gave me a cutting from his bush. I cut it into 3 inch stalks in the winter. I put them in ground where I wanted them to grow. I then drew circles around the cuttings and covered with a mason jar. Come spring I had new rose bushes. I planted 6 and I got 4. Not bad.

it easy just cut and put the soil will growth, if you put in the water will die after one or two month from my experience!

I put one in a planter like an earth box and it took without me doing anything. I wonder when it would be ok to plant it into a pot it has three leaves on it. The ones I tried in water didn't do anything. I also tried the other method of rooting hormone that didn't work . I tried this also with hibiscus cuttings just using honey and it worked strange how somethings root without anything and others fail with rooting hormones..
