How to grow marijuana or weed in coco coir. Is growing in Coconut Coir better than dirt? This is the question today. Depending on your growing style, using coconut fiber may work. First, what is coconut coir?. Coir is the heavy pith under the coconut husk. It is biodegradable. Coconut Coir can be bought in 1 pound coconut coir bricks, which, when soaked with water, expand up to 9 times their dry size. Coir holds water well and coconut fiber is considered one more form of soilless grow medium. Uptowngrowlab doesn’t usually use Coir as we are currently growing organically and we stay away from coir. Coir fiber, after it is rinsed thoroughly of any salts, will hold what ver you put into the coco soil in terms of food for your plants. If you grow in coco hydroponically, or mixing the coconut coir with compost and perlite as Jorge Cervantes discusses, or using coir with expanded clay pellets in hydroponics, coconut fiber is an excellent component of the grow media. As with any grow media or substrate in hydro, with coir you need to be observant. Coir will not act as a buffer between any supplements or nutes and the plant roots. If you miscalculate the strength of your nutes the plants will suffer immediately with coconut coir. Explosive growth and quick ruin: The ups and downs of hydroponics with or without coconut coir. If you are using Coir, make sure it is rinsed and ph it before growing in coco. Additionally flush the coconut coir out at least 10 days before harvest. In an organic soil environment, the soil is living and working with the other organic minerals that either are already in the mix or that you layer into it. Not coconut coir . Soil acts as a buffer between the roots and any minerals or food matter so they may move a bit slower. Coconut Coir doesn’t do this. We don’t believe that coir should play much of a role in an organic garden other than to stretch out your soil mix and even then we don’t use it. We hope you enjoy the show and please subscribe!
