How to Grow Large 1-2 Pound and Record HeirloomTomatoes
Tips, Tricks
This video provides some basic information for growing large 1-2 pound tomatoes for size and maybe even getting to a record 3 pounder. The principle is the same but it doesn't guarantee a record. Every gardener wants that 2 plus pounder. It highlights the 'Virginia Slims' heirloom beefsteak. You will see the tomato first (no record this year) and the tips for growing large tomatoes to size following the introduction. New to Gardening? Check out my 2nd Gardening YouTube Channel dedicated to New Gardeners. The videos are longer and more detailed. Very good information! I think what Gary may have forgotten to have mentioned, is that genetics do matter also. So acquiring tomato seeds or plants from proven big stock will greatly improve your chances of harvesting large tomatoes.

My plants always produce smaller tomatoes. I will try your approach with some of my plants and reduce the number of stems or remove flowers.

Great advice, Gary - I've started over 15 varieties of tomatoes, I'm going to have my hands full (but looking forward to it)! I've managed to find different areas to keep all those Heirloom varieties separated. Your grow light box is working like a charm! I'll be making more of those today :) I'm sure you're snowed in like me in NoVa, be safe!

can I have any luck growing tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets?

Assuming good feeding and watering what size fruits do you thinkers could be acheived in a 25 gallon container?

The Virginia Sweet you grew looks a lot like tomatoes I grow called Mr Stripey.... Is it an indeterminate plant Gary? Delicious tomato, but tons of suckers to pluck to contain it to 2 vines....Have you tried growing any Big Zac varieties yet? I have some seedlings ready to transplant.. I grew them for the first time last year and had one ( from a Mega-Blossom ) just under 3lbs---biggest tomato I've grown.. Each plant produced at least one Mega-Blossom.. That would be a great video for you to do---looking for and identifying mega-blossoms and pruning off other flowers when you get one, as well as topping the plant to direct its energy into that 1 contest entry tomato.. A guy up in Minnesota just set a world record growing a Big Zac... I think it weighed 8 1/4 lbs.. Remarkably, he achieved this off a plant he allowed to grow only 3ft tall.. Again as I've said before, I've probably learned more from your tutorials than anyone else's on YouTube and appreciate and pass that knowledge on....

A good looking tomato as well as a big one! Great video, thanks.

Gary-- For speciallizing on large tomatoes at what point do you suggest removing flowers and tomatoes. Should this be done when all are small or wait till later down the road?
-
feeding your plants with compost tea once or twice a week and youre set.

Hi, you can put a bird bath near your tomatoes so they will drink from the bath instead of drinkung the juice fron your tomato!

Hi Gary I have been following you're video's lately because I wanted to get back into the swing of gardening because at first i tried doing them in containers and i loved my little experience but now I'm going big with a 4x4 raised garden bed and i first wondering since you live in zone 7 area as well (I'm in zone 7a) i was wondering if i should wait to start the seeds till the first week of April or my spring break because you know we've been a really confusing and cold winter and I wanted to give my seedlings he best they can get. And i was also wondering if you saved those Virginia Sweet Heirloom tomato seeds O.O I have never seen or heard of them before and I am obsessed with Bi-Colored tomatoes like no ones business and i was wondering if you could mail some down to me by chance that would be amazing :D! Can't wait to start this year!

Gary, you have become my go to guy this year. I live in the North so I do not share the same zone as you, mine is 4, however, the tips and info you share are great and do apply to everybody! My biggest production is garlic which takes up lots of my garden so this year I'm doing container planting. I have some very hot pepper seedlings in my grow room along with some interesting tomatoes. Thanks for the cheap grow light idea, it worked perfectly. Here we are 7 of march and I have a long way to go till putting my plants outside. My question is, which is the minimum size container for tomatoes and hot peppers?
-
I have found that if you let the tomatoes closest to the bottom of the plant grow they will get larger and pick the ones at the top as to not stress the vine from weight. I have grow several 4 and 5 pounders myself.
-
do you replant your tomatoes every year, or do they live through the winter?
-
Love your video. Can u tell me why the tip of my new tomato leaves curve in like a little bud. ? It grows slow. I planted in the 3' by 6' raise bed.
-
I find that the smaller tomatoes are better tasting.

2 pounds? That's almost a kilo! Whoa!!!

Thanks so much for that information, Gary. I always wondered why my tomatoes never go to "super-size". I am going to try this with one of my plants Can an older tomato plant that is cut down to just one vine produce larger tomatoes? Or do you have to start with the real young plants?
