I discovered that removing the three tiniest buds from each scape, as soon as you can see them clearly enough to remove them with a small tool, has huge benefits. It causes daylilies to flower more, more quickly and reduces the need for dividing so often. I have grown repeat bloom daylilies in pots that only began to repeat flower after I started using this method on them. This simple task makes it possible to keep the daylilies in the pot for six years before dividing. Also, the stems become very strong and very tall daylilies will stand up with no staking. I have not found any that fall over after disbudded in this way. If you have a daylily that does not repeat, you may find this will get them to do that, though this will not work for every daylily.
This method - the Dr. Ruthless Method - makes the stems easy to remove completely. Instead of deadheading the last flower on a stem, I grasp the stem close to the ground with both hands and yank it out. The stem will come out cleanly and can be cut up to recycle into the garden. If allowed to dry they become quite hard but they can be broken up. If you try this on a plant or two, you might soon be doing all your daylilies this way, as I do, and getting more flowers with excellent wind resistance.
I have used this method on many plants and find it causes them to survive and thrive in ways that I had not previously thought a casual gardener like me could achieve. -
thanx for your help!
