Growing Blueberries: ensure you get a bumper crop of fresh Blueberries, what compost to use, what feed to use with some great tips on How to Grow Blueberries simply in containers, so you can grow your own fruit even if you don't have a garden. http://www.KillarneyGardenCentre.com In this video I want to chat with you about the amazing little super food that is the 'Blueberry'. They may be small in size but they can certainly pack a big punch when it comes to the health benefits from this fruit and kiddies love them. The Blueberry bush I am using here is the 'Blue Crop Blueberry' - I like these as they are self fertile and don't need a pollination partner, however, if you like Blueberries and in order to have lots of delicious fresh blueberry fruit all Summer long, I would suggest you plant 2 or more plants together. When you are planting Blueberries in the ground make sure you plant them in free draining soil. They also like an acid type soil, when other fruits actually like an alkaline type soil. Make sure you use a good feed like 'Sulphate of Potash' when you are planting and ideally use Ericaceous compost. Blueberries love the sun, so plant them in a sunny location and at the same time make sure the plants are protected from strong winds. Now the other great bit of news I have for you is Blueberries are actually simple to grow in pots / containers. You will need a pot / container at least 50 cm wide to cater for one Blueberry plant. To ensure you have sufficient drainage for your plants, add some stones to the bottom of the pot. FIll up your container with Ericaceous compost, mix some Sulphate of Potash through it, plant in your Blueberry plant, secure around it with some more compost, water in well. If you do this around November / December there is very little to do with them until Spring time when the new leaves and flowers start to appear and then you start to water them again. Then I would suggest giving them a weekly feed of a good seaweed based Tomato food until they start to produce the berries in Summer. This will ensure you have an abundance of fresh, healthy, juicy Blueberries to enjoy all Summer long.
