Hi- just found your channel today. I'm in Michigan, too so looks like long day onions? How do you tell? I don't think they're labeled that way at the nursery..... As far as onion sets and being biannual. Are either the sets or plants a year old? Just a little confused on that. Thank you

when should I transplant my onion seedlings?
-
If you are right about at the 37 degree latitude line, can you grow both successfully? I'm at 37.99 degrees latitude...

What if I'm on the equator should I plant a long day onion or short day onion
-
Any idea about fertilizing ailsa craig onions. The paket shows not to use fresh compost + don't like ro use artifical fertilizers.
-
too much talk but its informative

So now you lost me even more, long day means more sun, short day means less sun right, so the northern hemisphere gets more sun in the summer so its long day for the growing season, and short day is the same all year like the equator etc which gets the same amount of sun all year around about 10 hours.....have I got it now ? I was in the Philippines and the sun set at 5:30, yet here in Canada the sum sets at 9:30 ish so we have LONG DAYS OF SUMMER for growing......hehe.

Thank you so much for all your videos. I am in central Maryland. I have never had luck with onions. This year I follow your advice and got the semi dormant onions and I now have over 50 onions in the garden that actually look like onions. I always got the sets before and got nice flowers but no onion bulb. Also I have hard clay soil no matter how much compost I add. I planted the onions closer to the soil line and they are growing great! Thanks again.

are you snipping the tips off? I noticed that every one over a certain length that they where missing the tips. I have heard of cutting the tops or tips off to encourage new shoots but have not see or really had anyone verify this a good thing to do in order to get large bulbs

Good vid, thanks so much

I'm in Florida and mine are getting big and top heavy, I just wTched another video that says I should cut the green tops down to about 10 inches and the bulbs will get bigger, will that help or hurt? Thanks, I'm subbing now, it's obvious you know what your doing.

Instead of using cages do you have any other ideas of what we can use? Im growing maybe 150 onions

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WATER THE ONIONS?
-
Onion transplant come green, but most people buy them a month or two later then they need to. So the bundle of green onions turn brown, but they will grow.
I get my onions in late Feb. or early Mar., but when I go back to the retailer to get tomato plants they still have the same onion plants for sale. that is a month to 6 week later. -
Great information. Thanks!
-
I heard from one person that when the onions start to bulb then cut the tops lower. Should this ever be done? I'm in zone 9

Great video! What are your thoughts about "day neutral" varieties? I am at 39° latitude, 6000ft altitude. Have had luck with Superstar and Candy, but wonder if limiting to day neutral variety is really necessary. Thanks
