cutting the suckers causes more stress to the plant than it's worth, imo. planting closer together makes the corn much taller, like 4" apart.

@high desert garden, why does the corn need to be ten feet high? (I'm not judging, just curious). Thanks!

Good presentation. I agree you can space it much closer for higher yields but we all learn fro experience. I know I did... Fertilizer is a biggie with corn and composted chicken manure does wonders for the garden... so does cow manure that is desiccated... I got mine from Home Depot called "Black Cow"..gave me tremendous results with all the other parts of my garden. Good luck with your future gardens. Every year is a learning experience for me...and I am a Master Gardener.

I always heard high as a horse's eye by 4th of July from my dad. He was born in 1913 and farmed all his life. But I think he was mostly talking about field corn.
I'm trying bottom irrigated raised beds this year and have 128 corn plants in a 4 foot be 8 foot bed using my own leaf compost. It's an experiment, we'll see what happens.
Good tip taking off the suckers. -
your plants are to far apart. corn pollinates from top down. no farther than 12 inches apart and rows 40-50 inches apart. underpollination gives your corn missing and underdeveloped kernels. I'd say you have them about 16 inches apart and your rows around 60 inches apart. At those distances pollination would be compromised.

What is the variety of corn that you grow? That is a lot of sucker on fourteen stalks of corn. We plant old variety that has been grown by my family for generations; it has suckers, but they are very rare. You are right about the sucker pulling nutrients away from the main stalk, causing smaller ear(s) on the main stalk. I have seen this on the sucker stalks found in our corn. Thank you for sharing this video. Good and happy gardening this 2016!

Hello. Your corn looks really healthy and strong. You must have harvested it by now, how did it go? Is there a video I can watch showing the end result?
