So, how do you grow onions?
-
I don't understand. When we buy onions, they don't have all of that growth out of the top. Also, to produce one of these onions requires one onion, is that correct?

I just cut mine because I had a heavy aphid outbreak then found this vid that backed me up. I take all celery, onions, leeks, carrots, beets and basically any veg. with a root to be cut off when cooking and shove it in the ground to "make it or break it" if it doesn't produce a finished veg, I can use the cuttings in the kitchen and let it bolt to collect the seeds as I do every year with loose leaf lettuce.
Basically can't hurt. If I don't get a big bulb after cutting the Really long leaves, I'll get seed and start over as other than a one ft. wide along my fences (very low sun lighting) and container planting are my only choices on this one third of a city lot bookended with two garages and interlocking pavement throughout. -
GREAT IDEA. AWESOME VIDEO.

I cut my onion tops and they are getting huge, and new leaves continue to grow out of the center and I cut them again. My question is...will the leaves still fall over when they are ready? We are into Oct. here in MI. it's getting cold and they are still growing.

holy cow those are really big as is. how long were they growing for?
-
very good

i am having severe wind problems my house is like a wind tunnel thank you for the tips..
-
what kind of soil did you planted them in?
-
The only thing I've cut on onions while they are green are the seeds. The leaves are what store the energy for later bulb development. Clip the seeds before they open so that energy goes to the bulb instead of into the seeds. Leave them alone and the onions will do fine.

Hi enjoy the videos, I wanted to find out about planting baby
store bought onions and if they will go to seed because they are a biennial
plant. I have small 1 inch white pearl onions. I prefer for them to go to seed
because from the seed I can grow the equivalent of welsh onions. I large green
head green onions. Do you think this plan makes sense and what are the chances
of success given your gardening experiences? -
Funny thing. I just saw i am a part of this group, after i watched the video. Hmph.! Nice vid made. I can defintely assure that the foliage is plants engine power. Keep a HEALTHY foliage = healthy harvest ;)

there are a lot of plant that when topped the fruit will get bigger. All the energy used to grow the part removed will now be used for the fruit.
-
You can also dehydrate the greens and use them in soups.
-
but cant you eat the bulbs im sorry im new to gardening the look like regular onions at the end
-
You didnt start these onions from "sets".. You started them from "Slips"..... Sets are the small bulb onions that you buy in a bag and slips are the ones in a bunch with he rubber band around them. just saying.

What type of soil mix is that, planting my onions this week and was thinking of mixing some sand or possibly wood chips from my wood shop into the soil mix. Any suggestions?
-
I told a friend to do this once, and she told me that if you do that the rain will go down the inside and rot the bulb. I thought it was funny.

Those things were bouncing out of the soil, already. Why not just harvest them before the wind storm?
