I was told that I could eat any shoot that was at least 9mm thick. A simple rule to remember.

Thank you for your video. I have 5 plants, about 2 yrs old, I haven't pick any asparagus yet. What do you recommend to do with the shoot that dies and dry up? Cut it off, let them fall on their own..... ? Thanks!!

I planted my plants about 5 years ago, I let them fern for 2 or 3 years then i harvested them but they were thin and the dogs kept eating them as soon as they came up. I also let the weeds take over last year. This year i have nothing. Did i kill them? Can i weed it out and see if they come back or do i have to start all over? Thanks so much! :)

Thanks for the great video. I think you answered my question and gave me HOPE!!
I have some asparagus in a very tall planter/pot. I had it from a small plant in Florida. It was somewhat neglected and got a beating with the hot weather and rain. And it was in a very small pot as well. I moved to Eastern North Carolina 2 years ago. It survived the move and seems to like it better here. I started researching growing asparagus...it is an amazing plant!! Since we are renting now, I chose the tall pot, so it can go with us when we move again. So the last 2 years it has been a very pretty plant. Tall, flowy, fern. But nothing to harvest. Every time I thought we had something it stayed skinny and shot up into a pretty fern like plant. I was about to give up. So after watching this, I'm going to wait another year and hope for the best. Is there hope? -
Hi.. This is first yr. of trying my luck at growing asparagus . I have them in big 1/2 barrels..I planted them in February 2016. They r doing great. . I think everyone of them come up..they r tall, and etc..my question is..it is August, and we in Arkansas r having hot weather...I water 1-2 times a wk...
I am noticing that a few of the leaves or whatever they r called, r beginning to turn brown..not all, but some...is this normal..I sure don't want to loose them...help -

About two years ago I planted some asparagus, about the size of what you have here. When we moved last year I took a punt and transplanted the lot to a pot. Surprisingly it hasn't died but as the plants are quite big I'm not sure what the best way is to move them back to the garden. Any suggestions?

so, 3 years ago, i planted asparagus by seed. didnt really plant them as deep as you recommended, but they came up. the first year they were just tiny cute ferns. i admired them, but there wasnt really anything to eat, and i heard it took 3 years for them to mature anyway. year two... some asshole planted tomatoes just in front of my asparagus... they spent that year in the shade... stunting their growth and pissing me off. now, year 3, i have gotten only 3 good shoots out of them that i deem large enough to eat. all remaining i simply let go to fern to strengthen the roots more. the odd thing is that i am moving. well, gee, 3 years of patience for nothing? hell no. so i got the biggest pot i could find, and dug all my asparagus up. gave each as much space as i could and hoped for the best... thats when i got my 3 eating stalks. they grew strong and healthy. once moved, i plan to make a proper asparagus patch, prepared as you recommend. it will be along the garage on the south facing wall. I move in a month, and am excited to get building the box.

Great video. I live in zone 8b and it gets really hot and humid in the summer. I am not sure how much sun asparagus should get and I want to put the bed in the right place. Also is Mary Washington the choice for South Carolina or one of the Jersey strains?
