I start off with a seed that have a 1-2 black thin lines on the bottom of the seed, is it the root? And is it dead?

you can't get fruit from a store bought avocado.
They come from cloned, grafted stock for commercial farms. A tree will grow but will bear no fruit.
Especially Hass avocados, which are proprietary. -
Any recommendation on the type of dirt to use?

after watching several videos I just now noticed the correct way your suppose germinate the avocado seed point side facing up I did it backwards and I already have a full root any suggestions
