How to Easily Clone Tomatoes and Root Tomato Suckers - The Rusted Garden 2013

You can pinch off a tomato sucker (which has a growing tip) and root it in plain water. In 7-10 days it will have roots long enough to transplant into cup. In another 7 days you have a clone of the original tomato plant that is ready to go into your garden. This is just 1 way to easily root tomato suckers. It is a great way to make a back up plant in case harm comes to the original. I had an old tomato sitting on my counter. when I went to throw it away, I noticed it was rooting within the tomato. how can i make a plant with it? can i put the whole tomato in a pot?

Beautiful. Great method to duplicate hybrid varieties. Useful technique in where I live, where heirlooms tend to succumb to the TYLCV and TMV.

So I plucked off some really tiny suckers off my cherry tomato plant (about 2-4 inches), they started rooting should I let them root longer in the water before planting them in a cup of soil?

Peat moss is Bullcrap , it dries out and never holds water again, I never use it anymore

Hi, I've been trying this for awhile now and it seems like as soon as I get roots the leaves of the clone dry up and die while still in water. There are not enough roots to plant it but enough roots that the system should keep the plant alive, then doesn't.
I had a problem before, too, where the stems would rot but I fixed that by changing the water every 24 hours. I do this indoors, by the way.
I tried several google searches but I just get results for cannabis/developed tomato plants. Any advice? Love your channel! Easily one of the top 3 gardening channels.
Oh, also, I planted 3 tomato clones recently, under a tree with very low sunlight in order to adjust them. The roots were moderate, not more than an inch, yet not so developed that they were in danger of tangling. One plant died and then only one of two branches survived on each of the two surviving plants. These were the clones that experienced stem rot and so were reduced to having very short stems with which to grow roots. (Still though they had enough roots they should have survived.) Any thoughts on this little experiment would be appreciated. -

I am in Queensland, Australia, which would seem to be the perfect growing environment for tomatoes, but I am not getting the rootiing that you are getting.. mine take at least a month. I have followed your instructions, the only difference is that the tomato plant I cloned it from as starved of light. this would
slow down the growing process yeah? -

Gary, I have remove 6-12 inch suckers and I added them to water and changed the water out ED or EOD. They eventually started flowering, but no roots have formed. They also are placed in a shaded area in the house with no light. Should I put them in the shade in an outdoors environment? I have had them now for 2 weeks. Thanks Gary
