Thanks guys! I'm just about to divide some irises in our new garden over here in Wiltshire, UK. Your video gave me useful advice. Happy gardening from the old country.

go for it; any hybrid, cross-slash-awful iris plant, loved by Pacific Bulb Society (bleh!), can be chopped any and which way if you ask me. What about a vid that shows how to divide/propagate rare species irises? (y)

I live in Southern New Mexico. Is it too late to divide and replant my iris this year? I'm writing this on October 16, 2015

FINALLY, a video that purports to show how to divide irises, and actually does! Starts at :50. I watched several that wasted my time by not really show the dividing. This one is clear. THANKS!

Wonderful video! Thanks!

GREAT! Well, I have never had any dealings with them and a neighbor brought me a bunch she pulled up. I just separated them and planted them. Then I found this video....now I have to go pull them all up and replant!!! lol I think I planted them a little to deep and did not cut the tall leaf's off at all. I am trying mine in pots though so will see what happens...don't know if I don't try right?!?!? Wish me luck and thanks for the video :)

My irises have they bulb half way exposed. I was thinking of replanting them deeper. Now I think I just need to put some soil on it and "step" on them, right? Thanks for really nice video with simple and helpful instructions.

Although this is rather a late response to your question -- the tops are cut off so that the plant can spend its resources regrowing roots without having to maintain big leaves. You should definitely do it in Zone 3 [where I am also] so that they can grow sufficient roots to survive the winter.

but i wouldnt put any soil on them. if your going to remove that soil later fine but they cant live like that
