Make some movable goat and pig pens. Start with goat, and finish with pig. Pig will eat all the roots. Of course after melon harvest.

How can you folks make any money cropping like this? Very small looks less than an acre. You can't be doing this for a living. The weeds are pulling moisture and nutrients from the soil even after cutting. Yield will be low. Now you know why hardly anyone organic farms. I know two who quit the practice going broke fast.

Sickle or whip cutter

I feel for you buddy. I'm not a full scale farmer like you but I have about 15,000 square ft of garden space and do it like that sometimes. You should try a japanese grass knife or some type of hand sickle. More control and less fatigue from squeezing those hand clippers over and over. Also might want to try a good wheel hoe with a 12 inch to 28 inch attachment and just sweep the rows a couple times a month before the weeds get established. Sometimes you can't get to them in time but if you get a pattern going your plot might not need the troybilt anymore. Takes a few years of consistent sweeping of the baby weeds though. Might not work with all the diversity in your system but I figured I'd mention it. Eliot Coleman style

After you get the weeds under control, why not grow those melons vertically? Mel Bartholemew's Square Foot Gardening shows you how, and it works great!

Clip as much as you can, then newspaper and mulch.

Lol yoooo you ARE a bad ass farmer. Great name! Your style is cool and different. Good stuff.

Holy Moly thats gotta hurt ur back and knees. U need 10 more people helping you, its soo much on 1 person. Ouch!

What about using a propane weed burning torch? I don't think you have to get down to the ground to kill the weeds. Personally I've not used one and that's why I asked instead of stated. Soon plan to get a weed burner and will know if it works. Sure hope it does because my back is all out of kilter and I know I couldn't do what you were doing.

I have to do it the hard way too... and I just have a yard with dogs. Trouble is, we get foxtails, which I have to pull and put in the can - I can't just weed wack it or the foxtails get all over for the dogs to get in their paws and ears :(

You could design a long handle clipper. Save your back some pain.

Incidentally, I notice this video is two years old. The whole question of organic
farming is under serious study regarding nutrition, cost, safety, production, etc.
In short, it seems more like a fad than a production method. -
If you have rows, just Bush Hog it.

I hurt my back just watching.

how 'bout using a gas-powered hedge trimmer?

I like when weed grows on my farm.

Aren't the weeds gonna grow back? Shouldn't you take them from the root

I just started my own farm in PA. Parents own the farm, but never used it for anything. I grow about 3 acres of vegetables chemical free (no pesticide, herbicide, or chemical fertilizer), and I have everything set up in a permanent bed system. I have 4' rows of crop ground followed by 5' of grass strips. I have it set up that way so I can run a rear discharge lawn mower over the grass strips. This keeps the farm really clean looking at all times because the idea of clearing tall weeds is not daunting. I just grab a cool drink and my headphones, and mow all day long. I can get all of my mowing done in about 5-6 hours. With melons, I just let the weeds go usually. This year I am going to try to establish a stand of clover and plant melons into it. Really the only hand weeding I do is in the row in-between crops and thistle that likes to spread into the rows from the grass strips. Not sure if this system would work for you, but since I'm working by myself I had to figure out a way to get it done on my own. I also have a lot more land at my disposal, so the large grass strips may seem a bit wasteful, but I think it helps with soil health and with beneficial insects. Great videos by the way, I'm getting a bit of cabin fever since our season ended about a month ago and I'm watching a ton of youtube videos on farming.
