Species Sunday: Fish https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2F4BE1931D73538C The Nitrogen Cycle- The Nitrogen Cycle is one of the most over looked, skipped and quick hit parts of your aquarium, so I want to talk about bacteria today. Last week we talked about balance. As we know Fish poop and un eaten food is waste or ammonia Ammonia Or NH3 which is highly toxic. (This is why we get fish out of the bags quickly because if they sit in their own waste in a small container they will die) Don't feed your fish before you take them somewhere you put them in a bag, their poop will ultimately kill them if there is too much of it in the bag. (also- Fish can go hungry a minute) So Ammonia is in the fish poop-Next the Nitrosomas break down the Ammonia using Oxygen to Make Nitrite Or NO2 which is slightly less toxic to fish.Next Nitrobacteria break down the Nitrate or NO3. Nitrates are toxic only at high levels. Anaerobic Bacteria (Anaerobic- NO OXYGEN) break down Nitrates to obtain oxygen and release Nitrogen which PLANTS USE! So We have to back up and look at all of this We don't go directly from Fish poop to plant food. It has to be broke down by Nitrosomas and Nitrobacteria. SO WE WANT A BUNCH OF THIS BACTERIA. How do we get this? Large Filter pads yes-but more importantly- Your substrate. Think about it. You have a significantly larger surface area to maintain this beneficial bacterial that keeps your aquarium healthy. Since NH4 can bind well to clays and is toxic at high levels in the water it binds in the substrate. (To site the mighty Tom Barr.) You'll note, I was over at Bryans a few weeks back, he runs an airstone in every one of his tanks.. This is not an accident. You need all of that readily available oxygen for both your fish, and the bacteria that break down your fish poop. So to wrap this up. You want to consider the bioload of your tank and not adding fish too quickly. If you want add anything quickly- Make it the plants. You want your bacteria thriving and growing at a rate that can take up your fish waste at a higher rate than it is produced. ALA- Balanced tank Welcome to Dustin's Fish Tanks YouTube Channel. Is dry start method a substitute/alternative for cycling or only for establishing plant life in a tank?

I have been doing a bunch of Facebook LIVE as
it fits my quick style - Click here to follow me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/DustinsFishtanks.
And EVERY DAY I do 30 second

how many days does it takes to have nitrogen cycle developed in aquarium . i have already put graveps from old tank...how many days will it take to develop bacteria
-
If you have artificial plants and therefore no substrate, how do you have that beneficial bacteria in your tank?
-
And I thought plants use CO2
-
Is it mandatory to add bacteria manually during tank set up? Or bacteria develop at their own without any additional effort? What is your suggestion?

no sound

bacteria don't solve an algae problem... he started about algae and then about his biological filter like it solved an algae problem ? I think algae like nitrates too.... strange, anyway, the relation between iron and clay is simpel : clay is a dense and minor structure (particals less the 2 µm), so they bound a lot of chemicals in its minor structure. Put the clay around the roots of plants (under he roots is best if you have space), then the roots will take the iron, which is good for the plants.... Few questions remain : 1) Can anyone tell me more specific information about the difference in bioload color (brown = alife, black = dead ?).... 2) does anyone have scientific proof that the bioload-capacity of a dry-filter is better then a normal waterfilter (of any kind) ? Is the capacity of the dry-filter really so much better ? Is there not more actif biomedium underwater possible then in those "dry balls" ? 3) Is it a stupid idea to try biofiltration before your mechanical fitration, and not after ?

I got a 55 gal tank just installed but the water is Cloudy why

my one fish is a bn pleco btw. I wouldn't have him in their for the cycle if I had another established tank for him. I drop a hikari algae wafer in every other day or so. I haven't seen him eat but in the am. they r gone. I have small rocks as substrate. and not enough to fill the entire bottom. I like the less is more look i guess.

I gotta pick your brain dustin. Im still in cycling mode. a little over a week now. I just tested water Conditions, and my nitrites are off the charts. no plants. and only one fish. why is it high. how can I control it. where am I at in the cycle?

OK, watched this video twice!
I have my 2nd Miracle Grow tank going, 7 days now!
So when do we put the fish in the tank?
I usually wait 30 days before adding any fish but the other day a Planted Fish Tank guy told me to add a few fish after 4 days to kick start the Nitrogen cycle?
So when do we add fish?
Thank you!! -
just set up a new tank no fish or plants yet and I wanted to know which if I should get plants before the fish, the guy at the pet store said I should have a few fish in it to build up some fish waste before I get plants, what do you think about this?

I have an issue and u might help. I have a 20 gal tall. I put in gravel, two 20gal hang in the back filters, heater, long air stone, and fake plants. I put in Dr Tim's one and only bacteria. I saw videos on it and people said it is a great product. The issue I have is that the cycle just stopped working. The ammonia was gone in 5 days, the nitrite is sky high and so is the nitrate. I did a 25% water change. Four days later there has been no change to my tank at all, the levels are still very high. I just added a plant in the tank to help with the nitrate, (micro Sword). Yesterday I did another water change and added more bacteria. I'm getting very frustrated with the tank. I went to my local fish store in town, and I told them my issue, told them that I did about a 40% water change, they told me that I just messed up my cycle by changing so much water and that I have to start all over again.
I'm frustrated, what can I do to start the cycle all over again.
Thanks for your assistance. -
