When it comes to cutting back perennials in the fall, garden author Doug Green http://www.youtube.com/user/headgardener2u suggests there are two systems promoted by different style of gardening. Here are those two suggestions for trimming perennials in the fall and which is right for you. It's a simple system that Doug is proposing and one he's used for years in his own perennial gardens. You can either treat it as a clean neat garden and prune everything right to the ground after frost has damaged the plants or leave the spent flowers with their seeds for the birds to consume. Either is acceptable and the plant doesn't care which is which - nobody prunes it in the wild so it will be fine either way.
