Thank you for this! So well informed and easy to see! In one of the comments below about apple seed you responded to the commenter that "to have an exact clone a graft is always needed" I have heard this said by others as well. I started a few trees from cuttings given to me by a friend (he'd pruned dozens of trees in an old orchard) so I am not sure about the "parentage" The trees are now HUGE and abundant with fruit. :) Doesn't a cutting always produce an exact clone?

Thanks for the information! I have harvested basil and dill seeds already for next season. The dill just bolted like crazy here in N.C. with our extra-hot summer. Going to try harvesting cone flowers and black eyed susans in my garden....

No point doing this with apple seeds because the trees are graphed as young trees and the seed you get from, lets say a granny smith apple, will be the root stock instead. Which is not a granny smith and some other fast growing small tree.
