How to Buy a Used Tractor
Tips, Tricks
See more tractor related videos at my website: http://asktractormike.com/. If you're a first-time buyer it's a little overwhelming to know what to look for and how to evaluate the condition of a used tractor. This video will give you ideas of where to look for possible problems and how to try to avoid getting one that needs major repair. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES…even with years and years of expertise, when the dealership I worked at traded for tractors, we'd occasionally get stuck with one with a problem. The only ones that are guaranteed are the new ones and they obviously cost a little more. If I were buying my first tractor I'd use this video to screen out the ones that might have problems, then if I found one that passed all of the tests I give you, I'd still consider taking my most mechanically minded friend out to look at it on a second visit, just to get a second set of eyes on it and avoid a clunker. Good luck!

there are such things as pto brake adjustments and that may be all it needs and buying from a dealer is not the best way to go. sorry but I buy and sell tractors and I'm seeing some faults in what your putting out there for people who don't know about equipment to scare them away from 1 buying from an individual and 2 from a machine that may need minor adjustments to be perfect. I farm and buy/sell equipment so I'm speaking from experience

Throw in there to look for dry rot on the tires. Make sure the are inflated to the high end of the tire pressure and spray the side walls and by the beads to see if there are any leaks . Also look for leaks and damage at the junctions of hydraulic hoses for the loader and the tractor itself. I like your advise on the PTO repair they are a difficult repair

For utility tractors with hours up in the 5-10000 range would be high however if your talking about older tractor for instance a john deere 4430 are known to run a very long life with high hours. Like you said it is a part about maintenance, but the model and manufacture also make a difference.
