Hi Mark! Would this work with the 3 following variables of; 1.) a bed 5' W x 8' to 16' L, 2.) use 2nd growth cut alfalfa hay & or non aged fresh leaves & 3.) an inner removable support liner fence ( like on the outside of the bed) to be used temporarily until all the wood chip and leaf mold are placed in the bed?

cool!...I plan to try this at the farm school Edugarden where I volunteer
-
I love your puppy! SO cute!
-
Did you have any problems with the soil drying up too fast?
How often did you have to water? -
Wouldn't the wood chips breakdown over the next year or so? Wouldn't that leave the outside perimeter vulnerable to rapid decomposition?
-
That was a nice project!
Why dont you buy a bag of seed spawn of mushrooms and try to inoculate as you fill it up?
maybe you will need to use straw instead of wood chips. -
love your idea need to plant my strawberries thanks
-
Good for my back. Thanks.
-
I wonder how that bed did over the summer? Did it stay to moist, or dry out too fast?
-
I don't have access to wood chips. I do have a lot of shredded oak leaves. Will it work to use the shredded leaves in place of the wood chips?
-
It will only air prune on sides the rest inside will not, best to air prune before you put in this setup for max growth. Would be better to make it not as high put in a kiddie pool and make wicking. I have been doing similar experiments with sifted wood chips with great results.

What does this cost? How long will it last?
-
I don't think I need a raised bed that high, but I might want to use that to build a large compost bin. Thanks.

What kind of wood chips are you using? I live in zone 5b and have access to Siberian/Chinese Elm bark, chips and Cottonwood bark, chips. Also bed my hens in pine shavings. Are these acceptable to make a raised bed with?
