How to Build a Raised Garden Bed with Wood - Easy (EZ) & Cheap
Tips, Tricks
I've built a number of raised beds over the years, but so far this design is my favorite. The sides are 2 x 10's and the top is capped off with a 2 x 4 shelf, which not only helps keep the 2 x 10's from bowing out from the weight of the soil but also makes a great place to sit when working in the garden. One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. How do people get dirt for their beds? Do you buy it or take from your yard? Because I know for sure I don't have enough extra dirt for just one bed

I got into gardening at the worst time of year 😖

Hello, I am from Ontario pretty close to you and had 2 questions:
1. Do you find 10" is an adequate soil depth for most crops?
2. Do you find 24" wide is sufficient for crops like tomatoes, cauliflower, brussel sprouts?
Appreciate your help. -
ok

Right on! I saw this video last night. Next morning, I built 2 of these quickly. Thanks for sharing!

Maybe it can be simplified even more: instead of the scrap wood, just center the sitting rail over the edge.

Let me pass on a problem I have with my first summer using raised beds and I've not heard of this before. I have two large Maple trees near my beds and I noticed I can never water these beds enough. Now that the season is over I tried to lightly till them over. Every inch from top to bottom is full of new roots from the tree... seems it loves the abundance of water and nutrients from my raised beds! I also had a huge pile of Horse manure curing for next spring with a plastic tarp under it... it too was rooted from top to bottom in just two months! These trees have to go! Have you heard of this too?

Shouldn't the post be on the outside of the boards to take the weight of the soiil as it looks like the screws are taking the weight?

looks great! I like your design

Love these videos Patrick! Better than whats left on TV for gardening shows. I'm switching over to raise beds this year. Interesting you used 10" (9/12") tall sides. I wouldn't think that would be deep enough for big tom/cuke plants esp if you aren't using the ground soil. I was going to use 12" sides but if 10" is good enough that's even better!.

At 1:30, the lumber looks like 1x10s not 2x10s. The lumber along the rim doesn't look like a 2x4.

I'm enjoying your tutorials! Thank you!

Thanks for this video - I've settled on your method as the one I'm going to use. Question - what would need to be done if the bed is not square? just unscrew a corner and adjust it? Thanks!
