As a horticulturist you should always advocate soil testing first. Strawberries have an optimum soil growing condition, just like any other plant type. You should give a brief explanation of soil chemistry (ie. the affect of soil pH on micronutrient availability) in addition to specific soil conditions that are optimum for strawberry (ie. texture, structure, OM level, pH, and soil nutrient profile). Then explain that there is no magic bullet that can make every soil work. Soil needs to be built and tailor made for each particular plant type, if optimum yield/performance is desired.
