Like Tessa mentioned before, adding sand to clay is a recipe for concrete.
Organic material does the trick, no-till is important and biochar can do wonders on clay and is super easy to make yourself. -
I am so glad I found your channel and you have a life long subscriber now. That experiment was just what I needed to see before the 2017 planting season starts due to the fact that I have that hard wet sticky kind of clay soil on my property and now i'm sure going to be using your method to have myself a great garden.

I VOTED THUMBS DOWN BECAUSE YOU USED ALL CAPPS!

Very useful, thank you!! I have finally managed to improve the soil in my raised beds by applying bone/blood/fish meal and farmyard manure. I could not understand why my soil clumped so badly because I did not know anything about gardening until a few months ago. I am still learning every day, but it's great to be able to find solutions that will actually work.

I have also found that gypsum is a great help to break down the clay composite.

You have a great video, as well as content but you really need to work on your camera work. it almost looks as if you tip the second soil sample to allow water to filter more quickly. just a personal tip. Other than that I loved the video and the content. :)

Clay plus sand not a good idea
-
Clay soil plus sand equals cement! Skip the sand and add more organic material.

I just came across this video after tackling my clay soil project. Here's what I did. My hubby tilled the hard clay soil we have in front of our house on a strip of city boulevard grass. (Trying to tackle the eye sore to enhance curb appeal) anyway ... after tilling, I mixed the clay soil with potting soil and fertilizer. I then planted my salvia cardona perennial plants. Do you think that's enough TLC to manage the clay soil? I saw on YouTube that adding epsom salt and coffee grounds would help with preventing the clay from hardening again.
PLEASE give me your green thumb opinion. -
Thank you brother. My first try at gardening and I turned my soil muddy so now I need to ammend it. Looks like I need. ton of leaves
Thankfully there is plenty. -
Vermiculite is a carcinogen as bad as asbestos. Mixing it up with a tiller will send up airborne particles that cause the lung cancer, mesothelioma. A mine near Libby, Montana, which was the source of over 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the United States was closed by United States Public Health Service, because so many workers there were dying from mesothelioma. I didn’t live that far from Libby, but never even heard about the mine closing. I got my information from my best friend in childhood who is the number 2 man at the United States Public Health Service. I was going to pour vermiculite between the concrete block outer shell of a new chimney & the clay tile chimney flue. (make sure the flue tiles don’t come from China, because of high levels of uranium in the clay they are made from-some clay plant pots & ceramic tile will will send a Geiger counter to ticking loud & fast-I'm a U.S. Merchant Marine & Homeland Security checks containers carrying imports randomly) He told me to get a hazmat suit with gas mask, and to seal the vermiculite very well. His best advice was to never use vermiculite because it is too dangerous to even be around it. It is sold under different names like Zonolite, Perlite, etc. W.R. Grace Company which had the mine in Libby, Montana also closed over 20 processing plants located across the country. As a result, there are many regions where there simply isn't a local vermiculite processing plant. So China is selling it under all sorts of name to fool U.S. Customs Inspectors. If it has the silver formica particles in it, then it is most likely Vermiculite.

Nice example. Great video! Thanks!

I really appreciate the demo at 4:30. Do you recommend any particular brand of Vermiculite?
-
also how can you tell when a plant has enough water if the water doesnt get absorbed?
-
so if you already have plants growing in the cray soil, then how do you help them by amending the soil after, what do you add and how?
-
Be sure that the weeds you use in your compost do not contain seeds. They will germinate.

Thank you for teaching me your cool
