If you wait to mid-late June to fertilize, especially if you use organic fertilizers, the plant's effort to make new growth is already done or well underway. By feeding this late you might get soft watery growth which will not harder off and survive the winter in zone 6 and lower.
Also only putting fertilizer near the "drip line" (there is no such thing as a crown line) you will deprive over half of the feeder roots. The best time to feed is around the time flower buds on the rhododendron's start to swell and show just a tad of color or about 2 weeks before the last frost in your area.
Lastly, the way to tell if your azaleas and rhododendron's are growing well is do a soil PH test. A dead give away the soil isn't acid enough (s/b around 5.5) is pale green yellowish leaves and a dark green veins with the rest of the leaves a sickly shade of green. Most healthy varieties shown have a leaf color of DARK green. If they don't, likely they aren't able to absorb iron which is necessary for them to process other nutrients. -
We cannot deny the fact that Rhododendron flowers are very eye-catching and it is very refreshing to see their existence. Sharing your great way on how to fertilize such plant could really help every beginner in the field of gardening.
