Mix in a lot of compost, especially if you have heavy clay or soil that doesn't drain well. After planting strawberries, spread a layer of mulch over the ground. Give your strawberry plants room to spread. There are two main categories of strawberry plants -- June bearing and Everbearing. June bearing strawberries produce most of their fruit in one big crop in June. Everbearing strawberries spread their crop throughout the entire summer.
