i think you should get trims according to your hair. my hair gets very dry even though its not dyed and i don't heat style, and so i get a lot of uneven ends and it looks like i have no hair so i try to get trims often

i haven't used heat on my hair for 5 years i was 8 last time i used heat and that was because it was picture day and my mom want my hair to be curled my hair is naturally straightish its straight some times and wavy some other times this makes my hair grow like crazy

I only use heat like once every two months ... and my hair is s=till short. I"m starting to drink more water but I also don't have dyed hair.
