I like your show and I heard that you didn't know what type of pom pom the news you had and they're called the near giant of California

Cool stuff.

Just found your channel and find it very informative and helpful. I'm in Michigan also and just purchased (May '13) some acreage with a river running thru it. I plan on planting native species that can be eaten by wildlife and us humans. I have already planted quite a few trees and shrubs so far including nannyberry and elderberry. I am looking forward to "living off the land" when I'm out in the woods. Thanks

I've never heard of pentas, but will check it out. I'll check all the plants you mentioned out. Thanks! Hummingbirds are real neat to have around the yard and garden.

Try tall red pentas. It is the favorite among hummingbirds, butterflies and bees for me. The shorter varieties are also good, but hummingbirds like taller plants. The hummingbirds also liked my croscosmia and red hot poker plants. Those would be their three favorites for me.

Thanks man!

You're welcome!

I wish I'd have kept the Old Mexico zinnias separate from the pom poms as they kind of got crowded out. But, I managed to save a few seeds from both again this year, so next season they'll be locally grown third generation plants.

Great stuff.

I like the idea of planting the Zinnias and the Marigolds throughout the garden. I will definitely be planting some Zinnias next year, because I didn't see any hummingbirds this summer, thanks. I agree about the Old Mexico Zinnas, I def prefer them over the other Zinnias

I like the idea of mixing the Zinnias and the Marigolds throughout the garden, thanks

Thanks Lone and nice to hear from you again as well.

There are a lot of beneficial flowers to add to the veggie garden; hyssop, catnip, zinnias, marigolds, nasturtium, calendula, the list goes on. I forgot more than I can remember. lol My mom loves morning glories and honeysuckle and has lots of hummingbirds around. Hummingbirds also seem to like columbine which she has a lot of growing as well throughout the yard. My mom is the real plant expert, especially when it comes to perennial flowers, me, I just plant stuff and hope it grows. :)
-
I'm sure they do. I planted marigolds in my tomatoes and had zero tomato hornworms. The garden right across from mine had hornworms and no marigolds.
-
We usually get a few hummingbirds passing through quickly, but this year they really stuck around for the zinnias. I would watch them fly down, buzz the zinnias, fly back up in the trees or rose of sharon, and then fly right back down to buzz the zinnias. I tried and tried to get the hummingbirds on camera, but they're too quick for me.

I don't know if zinnias would be a replacement to marigolds, but it's pretty common here to plant both. Zinnias are one of the best plants to attract pollinators though.

I thought it was a Norway way of spelling. :) No problem Halvor.
