The thing I don't understand is that the "suckers" on my plants have the majority of the tomato blossoms growing on them. Far more than the main stems.

My Roma tomato went from a starter plant to about 6' tall with flowers and fruit sets all over it in only like 3 months. 1st time growing anything and, I fertilized the Roma the same as the other 7 heirloom tomatoes but, the Roma looks about 50% bigger or more even. All organic fertilizer except the miracle grow garden soil. It's depleted now because it only feeds for up to 3 months. I used 1/3 miracle grow garden soil, 1/3 composted cow manure, and 1/3 coarse builders sand as my soil. I mixed in a bit of soil from the hole I dig too. Then Bone and, Blood meal and, sulfur at transplant and, Epsom foliar once a month starting at flowering or a little before. Oh and I did use Myco blast and supreme growers 4-step system but only one time. Is that average or huge for a Roma tomato plant being that big and productive in 90 days or less? I got tomatoes and flowers all over it. The tomato cage was leaning and, I had to stake it down and, then I had to stake some branches too.

How early can you get rid of your suckers? I grow organically from seed and wondered is there a particular age/height for when I want to get started pruning the suckers?
-
The sucker you cut off, put some rooting hormone on it and plant it. You will have another plant with a good headstart.

Fucking youtube, can't watch any videos because they are a bunch for brain dead twats. Fuckin sort your shit out so some of us can play the actual videos. PRICKS!!

Why do you have so many holes in your leaves? Can you prune some of the leaves to get air circulation? TFS Kris

Good grief. I saw another clip that said there should be one stem, like a tree, but then I thought that limits growth potential. I agree prune suckers near the soil to prevent disease & fungus. But I have to admit, sun flows right to the root as does the water and in 3 days, the tomatoes grew tremendously.

search cloning tomatoes and suckers on youtube. you'll find the answer.

do the suckers produce tomatoes and can they be replanted?
-
I started pruning our tomatoes last year and did pretty good until about the middle of summer then I seemed to slack off. Fortunately we had tons of tomatoes. I'll try to do better this year.

Excessively pruning leaves is generally frowned upon by most experienced tomato gardeners. Some do it, but there will always be people who are extremists. Generally, just remove the lower leaves to prevent ground transfer of diseases. Mulch the ground with straw (or something else) to prevent rain from splashing the soil up onto the plant. As for pruning the suckers, it depends on how you're growing the plants. If caging, prune very little. If up a string trellis, prune to a single leader.

Can you lay a tomato plant on it's side if it is placed in a pot?
-
Question: Do you have to prune the leaves as well? I had heard from someone that you leave 5 leaves on and pinch off the rest. Is this correct?

Thank you for the tips, they are very helpful. Now I just have to learn how to identify determinates from indeterminate tomato plants...some of my seedlings grew out from my compost and they will be a surprise variety : )
