Tomato plants actually want to grow more like a watermelon, spreading out along the ground and rooting wherever they touch soil. Gardeners steak them and force them to grow upward to make them easier to see and harvest.

That is a good thing to try. There are some tomato plants I stuck in a corner that gets a lot of sun and I don't water them often. They have been doing well on their own. Meanwhile the other plants that I "took bettter" care of died off while they were fruiting due to over watering. For next season I will most likely plant again in containers and in different places to see how they do.

I save seeds from only the very best tomatoes that I buy locally. I've bought vegetables from local farmers in the past and told them that I was saving their seed. Some have said "well, I guess you can try that" what? Another farmer of 60 years did not know that you can use seed from heirloom vegetables for the following year. He did not know that the vegetable itself, as long as it's not tampered with will supply your seed forever. Really terrible how dumbed down people are.

Unfortunately for me all 3 volunteer tomatoes I have let grow turned up to be off spring of some hybrid store bough tomatoes. and they had terrible taste. Vigorous health growth but taste of the tomatoes were cardboard like. Unless I am 1005 sure volunteers are heirloom I will not invest in volunteers again.
