Getting ready for the 2016 pumpkin growing season in my backyard. I spent some time getting the soil ready in the tires so that they will be ready to plant June 1st. I'm planning on growing 4 varieties this year (Big Max, Fairytale/Musquee De Provence, Connecticut Field, Howden). I will only be eating the Fairytale pumpkins, the rest will be saved to carve for Halloween. In case you're wondering why I used garden soil instead of raised bed soil, the answer is I needed something that holds water better. From last year's experience, the So Cal heat just dries up the soil in a day so I figured this might work a little better. I saved the sidewalls from the tires that I cut out just in case, although I don't see a use for them. Also I cut out both sidewalls rather than just 1. As for the knife I used, its a Gerber Torch II Tanto. The mix of soil that I used is: -Miracle Grow All Purpose Soil -Nature's Care Organic Garden Soil -Gardeners Steer Manure -Gardeners Chicken Manure -Gardeners Top Soil -EB Stone Earthworm Castings For fertilizer, I used: -Nature's Care Organic Blood Meal -Nature's Care Organic Bone Meal -Earth Juice Rooters Mycorrhizae -Alaska 5-1-1 Fish Fertilizer For the chlorine filter, I used: -GardenFreshFilter (GardenSentinel) As a backup I also got some Vigoro 12-10-5 and 15-30-15 fertilizer, just in case the organic stuff doesn't work as well as I hope. Please ,if you have any tips or advice let me know.
