Growing Potatoes for Christmas
Tips, Tricks
http://www.thehortchannel.com: As we enjoy the summer we must give some time to think about Winter and the crops we'd like to enjoy during the colder months. For new potatoes in December and especially Christmas Day, August is the traditional month for planting. Sean plants the variety Charlotte, putting two seed potatoes per 30ltr pot. Pots have the advantage of being mobile so when the frosts start to descend on the garden they can be moved into the greenhouse to protect the crop. What nutrients are the being given in the potato feed that you used? I haven't seen a potato specific feed anywhere I shop for my supplies, but I can get a wide variety of veg feed(they are usually 3 diff nutrients and the feed is named by it's quantities, like 20-20-20, etc)/

Wow! I've started all the other veg you have planted in your winter garden but never considered potatoes. It gets so blinking cold in NW Ohio. I may try one barrel in the winter greenhouse to see how it goes. The greenhouse is 8'x7' and will be semi heated with four 55 gal drums of water on the corners. I will have a small electric heater if the temps drop to -0. You have inspired me to try it.

Are those planters about 5 gallon bucket size?

Looks smashing. Long time to go but definitely giving everyone all the right tips. Cheers Sean. All the best.

Good video as always, thanks for posting.

I just fill those pots right to the top and they come up in no time in warm weather. Doesn't seem to affect the yield

Thanks Sean, Just ordered mine :)

How deep did you start them off? This is a brilliant idea. Thanks.

Well done Sean, Nice video. Where do you get your large pots from.
-
Interesting. So they need to be a specific kind of potato? Thanks for sharing? Btw... I am across the pond.

The great thing about charlotte potatoes is that they're ready in june before blight. When I've planted them at this time of year they've been blighted. You might have a better chance if you put them in the greenhouse.

I like the shorter videos, watch out for potato blight!
