Hey Bill. I planted my onions back in late summer/fall. We have had a lot of wind that has knocked down the onion leaves. Are the plants ok and will recover in the spring, or have they been damaged? Most of the leaves look like they have been flattened due to the wind.

Can you plant onions in late summer and get a fall harvest?

Good video Ron, I enjoy your way of talking, straight/to the point but you also have that dry humor I adore, lol! I use the same exact potting mix as you had there, and have also used coir instead of the spagnum peat but I'm having a hell of a time getting my "bunching onion" seeds to grow or even sprout for me! I've got a ton of other veggies growing already in containers on my patio so I know how to grow veggies. I'm not watering too much, there's no damping off, and it's infuriating trying to get this going. I know the seeds are good, I just got them and they're heirlooms and they're packed for this year's production. Grrr. But hey, love the tunes/music....it really speaks to my soul, ain't nothin' like a slide guitar!

You may have chosen the hard road to your onions here. It is easier to store the seed and just plant it in the spring. Since wild onions don't make sets you will have to store the green plants. I would probably take half of them and just plant them in ground now. The other half I might consider trying to store in vented plastic bags with dampened sphagnum moss at 40 degrees. Easier to just plant the seeds in spring or plant the plants outside in the fall.

These would be treated as onion seedlings not onion sets. As the plant size up from the seeding they would be transplanted into the garden. Since WV can get pretty cold in the winter your seeding would be best done in spring rather than in fall as we do here in CA. You are one tough character if you can eat those wood leeks. We had them in Wisconsin and I could never get past the smell to consider eating them.

Now I want to store the bulbs for cold weather planting. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for your reply, Here in the WV mountains a wild spring onion Allium tricoccum (commonly known as ramps, spring onion, ramson, wild leek, wood leek, and wild garlic) grows on the mountain side through the snow. Because of over harvesting and private lands, they became scarce and expensive. In my arrogance, and laziness, I am attempting to domesticate these plants at home. I transplanted around 3 dozen into planters and let them go to seed.
