OKRA is also good for lowering your blood sugar! Slice 4 or 5 pods in small pieces and soak them overnight on water, drain off the water and then drink the water. It's a little viscous and takes a little getting used to, but it has lowered my blood sugar to the point I no longer have to take insulin! (Remember you also have to eat moderately). I also save to sliced pieces and dry them for the seeds to replant! OKRA is and amazing plant....and it's yummy! :-)

I've only ever had it fried or boiled. Love it those ways. Will try grilling next season.

Okras should be harvested when they are 4-6 inches tall and while they are still shiny and have deep green color on them. After that, if you let them grow bigger, you can't eat them anymore as they will be tough and hardy. Best eaten when steamed and dip them on shrimp paste or in tomato sauce. That is how we do it in the Philippines where Okras grow like weeds! I love okras!

I bought some seedlings from walmart 12 plants in a 4in pot and they don't look like the seedlings on the videos mine are 9 inchs tall with 2 or three leaves at the top of the plant. There are no other branching up the stem. What can I do to get them to look normal? They were under shade cloth at walmart now they have full sun and I fertilized them with miracle grow for veg. and flowering and organic compost when I transplanted them they are doing well but they don't look normal. Please help. Im in zone 9b florida. Thank you.

Yeah, I'm in Florida and have been growing Okra now for the last three years. I grow then during the Summer time and between the high Summer heat and rains, they always grow like weeds. This is definitely one of the lowest maintenance plants I grow for food. I finally around to posting a video of mine on my channel. One thing I will say about okra is you really do have to check the pods often. They grow fast and it really doesn't feel good to go outside to harvest only to your too late.

I'm growing the same variety and it's huge!

If you soak your Okra in water over night it will cut the time it takes to come up in half. Another tip is the seeds which sink , I use a quart jar, are good one if they float they are dead at least this works for me.

Am trying 6 plants in my appartment here in Karlsruhe, Germany....high windows with lots of sun...will see how they do.

Okra is one of the few items which will grow in the Southern Heat during the Summer. You are able to use Okra so many ways however I have never heard of Okra on the grill

I grew okra pretty successfully in Florida, except I didn't know you must harvest when it's young and tender. It becomes dry, tough, non edible, and the seeds turn very hard if you wait until the veggie matures.

Yum, I love okra too! I don't know why it's so expensive at the stores. My brother had a garden this summer, and I ate all he could bring me. But, next summer, I'm going to grow some myself, in my own back yard! :)
