Growing Honeydew Melon from Seeds, Days 6-10
Tips, Tricks
I bought a honeydew melon (binomial name: Cucumis melo) to eat and took out 50 of the 200+ seeds that were in the center for a germination trial. It was a regular honeydew melon from a supermarket which was never frozen at any point. These videos contain my scientific observations and commentary on the progress of growth from beginning to end. I didn't do things properly because in the beginning I was concerned more with experimentation and I was new to plant growing, so don't despair, at around day 40 things really start to turn around! There's a lot of death and drama along the way, but please understand that this is a learning process for me and I eventually get things right and learn a lot of lessons. By watching this series in its entirety, you will learn to avoid many of the mistakes I made with melon/vine growing and hopefully prosper with your own crops. My future plant growing series will not be as interesting because I won't be making these same mistakes, although I will recap the important pointers and explain why I'm doing things the way I do. Some viewers are turned off by the prospect of not having a "user manual to growing honeydew" where everything is perfectly optimized, so if you are looking to follow instructions to the letter, this series is not for you. i'm trying to grow these for a science project! what kind of pot should i use (ones with wholes on the bottom or no?) how often should i water it? and should i keep it indoors with sunlight, or outside with direct sunlight & how much? thank you so much! this video is helping so much!

not sure but my melon seeds germinate overnight. so fast that it scares me!
-
Can you plant these at any time of year? I planted some in early summer and they germinated well.
-
why wouldn't u rinse seeds and plant directly in the soil
-
which month can start plant it

I think majority of those were sterile (hollow) you can feel the difference if you press each one between your fingers. alternatibly put them in water and discard the ones that float.
-
hey bud? great job man. I love how you took us through every step of the way! I heard classical music works great for the vines
-
Hi! What soil do you use? My seedlings are about 10 days old now and I'm planning to transplant them into soil. Currently using cotton wool and a small container
-
I think I will place the seeds in paper towel in a ziploc and wait for germination that way...which seems to be the quickest method. Your video is very informative, and you have a great voice, so thank you for this, Melvin.

Day 1, 7.22.15: I'm beginning the process right now...separated about 40 seeds from the melon, washed them, dried them, them put them in the glass bowl and added some water again, and have placed the bowl in the sunshine indoors.
-
o yes and i put them in sunlight to of the day the seemed to like this goodluck
-
hi hun i put all mine in wet tissue in a propagator and they have shot up beautifully have to check daily for mould on tissue lucky for me non hun and all my seeds rooted 8
-
There is an easier way to boost germination- put seeds in warm water (30 - 35 degree) few hours or even a whole day, and than place all the seeds on wet soul. The seeds also a warm environment (25 degree or above) to keep the seeds transform to a young and little plant as quick as possible! Otherwise your seeds can't grow probably.

How do u Transplant your plants without breaking the other plants roots because I usually do 3 to a pot
-
One time, my family finished their honey dew melon and afterwards, instead of throwing away the seeds, I threw them in my yard. In 3 days, They all grew and I started getting vines, however, my family pulled them out. Like really? Fucking idiots.

Those little white hairs protect the plant from harsh sun in the wild.
