Growing cucumbers in containers: Why do I always do this in Fall?!
Tips, Tricks
I have Japanese cucumber and champion bush cucumber. I had some harvest but probably will be more successful if I did this earlier in the season. Next year, I have to try to remember to plant it in the beginning of the season!

I have some lemon cucumber plants I put into the ground a couple weeks ago now they are starting to yellow a little. Do you know what is wrong? I know it's not insects or any sprays because I didn't spray them and I haven't seen any bugs or holes. I added compost when I planted so I'm not sure why they are getting yellow. It's been colder than usually lately in Portland OR (around 48º) at night. Could that be why?

Hi there.
I've noticed with my cucumbers that most of the early flowers are male & you have to wait till later in the season for females. One way to expedite the female flowering process is to tickle all the male flowers with your finger. This brings on more female flowers sooner. Then all you have to do is leave it up to the insects to cross pollinate male & female.
Cheers

Hey CCBG, have you tried the self pollinating varieties before? I grew a couple of them this summer, from unnamed seeds that a family member had. All they required for pollination was a little wind or a shake, then I had lots and lots of cucumbers every week.

HI CC - very impressive growing cucs so late in the season! I tried to grow some late, but the bugs got them and I took them out. Love cucs - good luck next year growing them!

+Rainbow Gardens they do quite well in containers. I was going to try again next year - this time in the summer so that I can get more cucumbers!

+Lucky Miller I agree with you. I prefer the skinnier type of cucumbers. I like the crunch and the flavor.

It works better if you take the peddles off the male flower. Alternately you can use a cotton swab :) my cucumbers this year took awhile and then produced a bunch!

GORGEOUS plants! They look very healthy. I grew two different Japanese Cucumbers. Soyo, it had prickley spikes on the skin and Telegraph, smooth skin. Both were very long, 18"-24" and both tasted great.

Nice fall harvest!

Very good! Harvest while you can! It's going to go down to 32 degrees overnight here so all bets are off for my outside plants. Will you be growing indoors this winter? I give you a green thumbs up!

Nice view of the cucumbers and you should invest in a small Greenhouse and keep it going longer in the season I still have bell peppers going in November and producing well. I know that you will love one if you had one.

Nice cucumbers and better to harvest a few than none ;) Our growing season is pretty much over, but I brought some plant indoors so I can garden a little over the winter. You and your mom take care, Elyse.
