I grow them but I never put them that close together . I do get nice leafs I use a handful of lime and good soil. have used some miracle grow to help them get started. we eat on them all summer and I plant them early

Well, in Texas you are very lucky.
My collards were almost waist high, nice big leaves. We thought the white butterfly we saw in the garden was a good sign---until watching Youtube videos and discovered that butterfly (pretty though it was) was merely a wolf in sheep's clothing. We planted in April, but my wife likes to wait until the frost hits to harvest since it is believed that they are better then! And BOOM! by the time the frost hit there was very little left--very little!
But this year (2016) I am using insect netting!! Fun's over girls!! -
