Growing Citrus From Cuttings: How To Keep A Tree You Love
Tips, Tricks
When my friend told us that she was moving we were a little sad. She was sad too, but for more than just that... she had to leave her beloved Key Lime tree behind. I have had some success with propagating fruit trees so I wanted to see if I could help her take this tree with her. _____________ UPDATE!! It is NOT a good idea to move citrus around the state! Is is a bad idea to move citrus around Texas and in California. Citrus in Florida has been pretty much wiped out by a disease called citrus greening or huanglongbing or HLB. See: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/11/27/457424528/how-long-can-floridas-citrus-industry-survive The economic damage in Florida is in the billions of dollars and thousands of people have lost their jobs. The disease is 100% fatal and exists in Texas and is threatening citrus farmers and homeowners all over the state: http://www.citrusalert.com/ We still have a chance in Texas and California if people do not spread the disease. People moving trees around spreads the disease much faster than insects. Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTDoW-NsJTE that demonstrates how to graft with disease free budwood ordered from the Kingsville Citrus Center at Texas A&M University: http://kcc-weslaco.tamu.edu/budwood.html _____________ Along with my success I wanted to see if we could up the percentages on getting this special tree propagated successfully. I found this YouTube video that steps through propagating citrus by cuttings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTRC1DQ8AXo In my demonstration I'm pretty much using this method because I believe it will help make this task successful. Great idea! Thanks Blake. Now, if I can find a true Lemon tree, not a Meyer Lemon. I want a cutting. Oh snap! The biggest, annual Fruit Tree sale in SE TX is taking place on Jan. 14 at Rice U. Bet I can find what I'mm looking for there.

without use of breeding powder it can grow or not which you apply on this tree

Thank you for uploading this video. I am new to this and I don't know if orange cuttings also have to be grafted eventually. Please let me know.

Gonna give it a try! So excited!

I took some eight citrus (lemon) cuttings and potted them in a mix of coco peat and sand and put it in a baggy after watering it heavily. I kept it in bright direct sunlight on the first day and even kept water in a saucer. Despite all these efforts the cuttings burnt off at the end of the day. I wonder what went wrong ! I have tried sweet lime before the same way by placing it in bright direct sunlight and it worked very well. There was good rooting in two months. Is the bright sunlight a negative factor for certain types of citrus ?

air layering works a lot better and faster and if you take a cutting so low on the tree is a good chance that you're taking a cutting of the rootstock

Iv tryed this method probably 40 / 50 time with in lots of 10.

I am having a calamondin tree and it is 2 year old and is been fruiting since 3-4 months ... n I have been showing the sunlight 6-8 hours and also fertilize in every 3rd week and my small tree is full of fruit and flowers and the fruits are full grown but still green and not getting ready to eat and I don't see any weakness in my plant it has got green fragnent leaves... but I notice that many of the small fruit drops down... pls address both of my concerns ... I live in Mumbai (India)

Could you not take a bigger branch so that you don't have to regrow as much? its going to take her some time to get a similar sized tree with that tiny cutting that you took
-
could't she also make some grafting's on other citrus trees? as a fourth method of preserving the authenticity of that variety.
-
Not to worried about cross contamination ehh.
-
thought you needed a root stock or the tree will be more likely to get a deisases
