Hi good gardening. One of the methods used to determine the maturity of carrots is the colour of the foliage and the colour of the vegetable itself. In this case the foliage is much too green and the colour of the carrot too pale. The carrots could have been a deeper yellow if not golden. These could've remained at least another month before harvesting.

OK. So I reckon your container is too shallow. Its also too close to the ground which means you will get carrot fly which will ruin your next crop! Carrot fly can not fly above 50cm so you need to get the carrots above that height..

I'm planting some purple dragon carrots in pop bottles to see how it goes. I may try to grow some in a 5 gallon container as well to see. Or I'll put some dirt in a pvc that goes into the ground for drainage. and put them in with my garden. I heard it helps to cover them when they are getting started. For my my concern is keeping them from rabbits (which I often see at my house) so I'll be trying to get them a bit higher up.

when you say add fertilizer, when and how do you add it in? is it soil?

My grown carrot are more sweeter and more flavour than store bought(supermarket) carrots I am growing carrots from seeds
