Well I guess growing this in Texas is a waste of time if max Temps for the plant is in the 80's?.......it's 90 degrees in spring time. ...

What is the ideal growing temperature for broccoli?....not looking for a typical growing season start time for my veggies in my heat zones....because well climate change is real and that stuff doesn't apply anymore.... I am looking for an actual temperature number....I know broccoli is hardy down to 35-40 degrees...I know that the Ideal soil temperature for broccoli is 60-70 degress....I know the high temp limit for broccoli is usually 85 degrees....I know the germination temp for broccoli is 65-75...I know the best temperature to harden broccoli is around 65 degrees.....But what I am looking for is the best scientific outside air temperature for growing broccoli.

I'm growing several broccoli plants in my garden, but without fertilizers etc.. only mushroom manure. So far they are still only leaves, at about 2 months old. Should I be adding anything else, to boost their growth, or do they usually tend to grow florets after summer? I started them in pots in May-June and put into the garden late June.

Will cauliflower continue to produce like this as well?

My broccoli is over 7 months old and has not flowered at all, think its a bad idea to have planted them in the summer. I've been giving them plenty of water, blood and bone, still no flowering after 7 months. Should i stop tending to my crop or will they flower over the winter time anyway?

Its not just you Tigeraction08 for the last 2 years 2010/2011 both my broccoli and some of my cauliflower have gone to seed.At first i thought it was because i had built a fruit type cage around my veg patch to keep off the white butterfly but i had some growing in another open bed that did the same and talking to a relatives friend his and allotment holders miles from my location had experienced the same problem?

i think i waited too long, cause my broccoli plants are flowering now and did i wait too long or will i be able to harvest them. also i had a rabbit problem where he would always eat the broccoli plants and its my first time growing it.

@Tigeraction08 It is the immature flowers or flower buds that you harvest before the yellow blooms burst open. It usually takes 2-3 months to get young broc plants to cropping stage. It's unusual for them to develop buds any earlier, unless your soil is poor an undernourished or you have a variety such as 'Chinese broccoli' which will flower within 6 weeks from planting

That's OK, the all start small and compact then expand to a full sized broccoli head. Takes 7-10 days from initiation. All the best!

@sweetlikecarmel Like most plants in the cabbage family, broccoli handles frost quite well. Does it regrow? Not sure what you mean, after frost damage? Quite possibly. My frosts aren't hard enough for that to be a problem, and we always grow it as a winter crop. It is an annual, so once it has exhausted it's flowering cycle, it's had it and you will need to plant a new crop.

does broccoli regrow? does it last thru the winter frost like collards?

@renegadetrainer You're right, you should always add a little potash when using blood and bone on broccoli. Sulphate of Potash is as easy source, also Muriate of Potash. Wood ash, compost and manures supply some potash as to pellatised chicken manures.

@thegardenguru1 Ok sounds good. What kind of fertilizer do you recommend? I have bone and blood meal but it seems like it might be too much nitrogen to add. Also, any other sources of the potash?

@renegadetrainer Add fertiliser at planting and a little more when they start to head up. I also like to liquid feed my crop every week/fortnight to really get them pumping

How often should you fertilize broccoli? I planted mine with Miracle Gro Organic Choice recently and I didn't add fertilizer yet. Thanks!
