Growing Avocado Trees from Seeds, Days 0-45
Tips, Tricks
The avocado is the fattiest fruit in the world, and certainly a very unique and delicious fruit because of that! The fruit, also called alligator pear, is technically a big berry that contains a single seed. Avocado tree orchards are common throughout Mexico and California. The avocado (Persea americana) is a tree that is native to South Central Mexico. Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. Avocado trees are partially self-pollinating and often are propagated through grafting to maintain a predictable quality and quantity of the fruit. Growing avocado trees is a popular pursuit due to the high price of the fruit. Typically people stick 3 toothpicks into the seed flesh from the sides and balance it half immersed in tap water. In this series I show my approach using hydrogen peroxide to keep the germinating environment mold-free. It helps to observe rooting in a container before investing a long time in a plot of soil or pot and finding out that nothing happened!

you butchered that avocado. that is NOT how you get the seed out lol but I enjoyed your video. I didn't know about adding hydrogen peroxide to the water would help with mold.

Good stuff. I submerged mine fully in a bowl of water and changed the water every other day. It cracked within a few days and within 30ish days I had a root. My tree is a few months old now and about a foot tall 😊

Great series! I started four avocado seeds with the toothpick and half submerged in water method, and two of them has rooted with a 2 cm root. The other two haven't even cracked yet.
How come you used a tissue method instead of the commonly recommended toothpick method? -
Hello Just wanted to stop by and say that your peroxide method is working on Two of my avocado seeds. They both cracked with in 12 days!!! I also have two previous avocado's that I had growing in water but the one avocado didn't do so well so I threw it out. The other one sprouted a root so I planted it in dirt. The pink little head is popping up. It looks almost identical to your video actually. I am so happy because it took months to get one to sprout. I've tried multiple avocado's with no luck..
I will come back in a few weeks to let you know how well my peroxide avocado seeds are doing. I am waiting for them to grow roots before planting.
Your method is way faster then putting the seed in water but the water method does work since I did have success with one of my avocado seeds. -
Thank you Melvin for sharing this.. I've always been curious about how to grow an avocado plant from seed! I hated avocado as a child, but as an adult I love them and will buy 4 or 5 when they're on sale. I eat a whole one in one sitting - I cut the flesh into slices, sprinkle on a bit of salt, squeeze some fresh lime juice onto them, and add a little Mexican hot sauce. Makes for a tasty heart-healthy snack =D

I've never heard of using the hydrogen peroxide for sterilization. My old roommate had a few plants she was trying to grow. I moved out, but I'm curious about how they've fared.

I'm growing two Avacodo's in water with the toothpick method and they are taking for ever. I see it doing something tho. Maybe I'll try your method since I got more Avacodos yesterday. GREAT video by the way. Your voice is very calming and soothing to listen too. I'm excited to see the result of your Avacodo full grown. Thanks for sharing

Great series Melvin. I've tried growing avocados for years and something always goes wrong about 2-3 months in. Curious to see how it goes for you. I do have a few at about 2 months now and they seem to be hanging in there!

I have about a 50% rate germination rate with avocados. The last seed that germinated I damaged with a nail, a and fungus gnats ate the first sprout. The seed I'd putting out 2 new sprouts, and there are hardly any fungus gnats. I'm a happy camper. I'm ready to start a new seed. Thank you for this video!
