Although tomatoes are easy to grow there are a few things to consider in getting the most out of your tomato patch. Tomatoes like warmth and full sun... at least 8 hours of bright sunlight a day. They also thrive in fertile deep well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Tomatoes are sensitive to water and they like moisture at a uniform rate... not too much or and not too little at a time. Well drained soil with a high organic content works well to keep your tomatoes happy. If you're a first time grower the easiest thing is to buy small tomato plants from an established plant supplier. There are literally hundreds of tomato varieties each with slightly different fruit ripening time and growing characteristics but there are three basic types: Determinate Indeterminate and Semi-determinate and each grows in a distinct way When planting your tomato transplants bury them deep from 50 to 75 of the stem length. Remove the leaves that might otherwise be buried before planting. Space plants 18 to 36 inches apart and water them everyday... about 16 ounces of water per plant per day. Caging or trellising tomatoes should be done when the plants are small being careful not to disturb the roots. Tomatoes grow well using organic methods in well-enriched soil but if you choose to fertilize use a vegetable fertilizer for stimulating fruit... don't use lawn fertilizer. Tomatoes are very satisfying to grow. Keep an eye on them harvest as soon as tomatoes have good colour and enjoy. And of course you'll find everything you'll need for fantastic tasting tomatoes.....at Canadian Tire.
