Use liquid metal in your design!

Sorry didn't read all of the reply's. You have probably figured it out, you need a vestibule on the entrance. What is the silver backed small foil insulation bubbles is it, They use it to insulate hot water tanks. It would fit in between the door frame and the door. It is about 1/4" thick. Since I think that this other stuff has a higher R value take it. use screws with fender washers, if you need to hold it down better use the galvanized flat strips with all holes in it at your favorite hardware store. Put it on the inside edge of the 2x4 then open the door fully leave a little more then attach to the flat of the door . The swing side you need some of this stuff too long so it will fill in any voids of the door to the frame. Folded back again if it is too wide of a gap.

Love your videos. I've noticed that you favor bubble wrap. I have a 6x8 polycarb greenhouse and live in the Piedmont of North Carolina. In your opinion, would weather stripping and .5 inch bubble wrap let me raise tomato seedlings with little or no heat? Thanks in advance for you answer.

don't the heater melt the plastic that's next to it?

I absolutely love this video. I want to build a nice, but inexpensive, greenhouse for my mother. She lives in south Louisiana so the extremity of cold is not a major issue. I am very interested in the poly carbonate walls. I have been trying to find a good material to build it with. I cannot believe how shockingly expensive fiberglass corrugated panels are. What are yours made up? Or, where did you get them? This is a fantastic greenhouse!

Great idea with the window film for the added R-value! Never thought of that!
-
Thanks for the video. "Bubble wrap is a great insulator". Really? What's the R value? @ 9:20 "I'm assuming huge insulating properties" The R value of window film is only about .8. To give some perspective, the R value of one inch of expanded (white) styrofoam is 4.

that's good idea to bring in fresh air during the winter from indoors. I'm planning a greenhouse but for whatever reason that hadn't dawned on me. How are you growing Phals and Vandas at 54F?
-
Where did you get the polycarbonate panels ps can you give me more tips for growing carnivorous plants thanks

Brad, this was so very helpful for me. I needed all this info. I live in southwest Missouri and I had no idea how to heat my new greenhouse. Thanks so much

If you seal the greenhouse 75-90% air tight is there not a risk of a Co2 deficiency for the plants?
Try oil filled radiators for heat, you can set it for lower power consumption, it dries the air less than your current andddddd they put off heat for an hour or two after. Oh and scrap soapstone as heat storage banks. Good luck!!! -
I'm looking to build a small greenhouse this year so I appreciates your thoughts on heating. Quite helpful and thanks. I'm wondering though, is it necessary to totally enclose the greenhouse in polyvinyl (or other transparent material)? I'm thinking of putting an insulating material (maybe a reflective rigid foam) on my north (non-solar) wall. Would there be any reason not to do this?

Its a good video but its not winter. -40 is winter.

Most who sleep in cold weather on an air mattress, find out they don't insulate good enough. Apparently this is because the insulating air space needs to be "dead air space" to be most effective. Any movement on the mattress, increases heat transfer to the cold ground below. This is what Batting is designed to do in a wall, buffer the air movement. A recent experiment has shown it adds little R value over an identical Tyvek wrapped, framed wall, with no insulation at all. The still air in the wall is the main insulating factor, The batting is only a thin layer of icing on the cake.
Like an air mattress, it appears your shrink film application is able to move, or be affected by something like an exhaust fan coming on or a door opening. Regardless, it still beats the hell out of sleeping on the ground, so to speak, and is a vast improvement over not having anything. Substituting rigid polycarbonate on the underside of the 2x4's might decrease heat loss further, but would it be a worthwhile improvement over the shrink film? That would be an interesting experiment. Thanks for all the tips, I will likely the shrink film! -
Your frame is wooden. You can add a layer of plastic to internal edge of your frame and then your will have a thick blanket of air insulation...

Amazing setup. I wonder how much this all is to make a smaller version.

More great tips, thank you.
