Spring is here! Today in Good 4 Utah Gardens we are working with Jeff Kemp from Millcreek Gardens in the Good 4 Utah Backyard creating a garden for the mountains, city or desert as well as edible landscaping. Desert landscaping isn’t just about “water wise” planting. Think textures, layering as well as warm and cool colors. Allgold Broom(Cytisus x praecox (C. multiflorus x C. purgans) 'Allgold') -Lovely, long sprays of pea-like flowers make this an excellent choice for mass planting. Beautiful rounded habit of dense, green branches having tiny green leaves. Deciduous. Fast growing to 5 to 6 ft. tall and wide. Full sun Daub's Frosted Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Daub's Frosted') - Golden yellow, frosted foliage tips create a striking contrast with the pendulous, blue green mature foliage. A good selection for mass plantings or a groundcover for hot, dry banks. Evergreen. Fast growing to 15 in. tall and 5 ft. wide. Full sun. Angelina Stonecrop (Sedum rupestre 'Angelina') -Brilliant chartreuse-yellow, needle-like foliage forms a quick groundcover. Adds cheery color to containers, dry slopes and flowering borders, as well as being a good bulb cover. In winter, foliage turns orange in northern climates. Perennial. 3 - 6 inches tall, 2 - 3 ft. wide. Partial to full sun. Lots are getting smaller and having plants that not only bring color and texture but also fruit to your landscape are getting more and more popular. Now is the time to prune fruit trees. It’s not as hard as you think. First remove Dead, Damaged or Crossing branches and then open up the structure so each branch gets sunlight and air circulation. Rainier Cherry Tree is a fruit-producing tree with outstanding yellow-cherries. Plant one in a prominent spot in your yard for its decorative appeal and the delight of watching your harvest develop. Often called the “white cherry” (for its creamy white flesh), Rainier is prized for its exceptionally sweet fruit. It is often considered the best yellow cherry by gardeners--sometimes even called the best of ALL cherry varieties. Full sun. Big Lifeberry® Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum 'SMNDBL' P.P.A.F.) -Grow superfruit in your own backyard! Big Lifeberry has extra-large fruit, perfect for home cooks. Goji berries are easy to grow in full sun, although some staking may be necessary for maximum access to the nutrient-rich fruit. Goji plants continue to flower and produce fruit through the first heavy frost. Add it to home gardens, or grow it in a large patio container. Moderate grower to 10 ft. tall to 5 ft. wide Filtered to full sun. Patriot Early Season Blueberry Vaccinium corymbosum 'Patriot' (Northern Highbush) - Prized not only for its early crop of large, sweet blueberries, but also its profusion of pink-tinged white flowers. Multi-stemmed shrub has lovely yellow, bronze and red fall color. An excellent hedge or specimen. Recommended chill: 800 - 1000 hours. Deciduous. Reaches 5 to 8 ft. tall and wide. Full sun. BrazelBerries® Raspberry Shortcake™ Dwarf Thornless Raspberry( Rubus idaeus 'NR7' P.P. #22,141) - This dwarf, thornless red raspberry has an endearing, rounded shape, and requires no staking! It nicely fills out a large container, or spreads slightly in the landscape. Self fertile, yielding large, nutritious, super sweet berries in mid-summer. Deciduous. Compact mound, to 2 to 3 ft. tall, cascading or spreading slightly wider. Full sun. Pink Flowering Almond (Prunus glandulosa 'Rosea Plena') - Double pink flowers early in spring. Ideal as a small shrub near a house or patio. Valued for its flowering effect. Flower size 1" across. Own root. Height 5-6 ft tall x 3-4 ft. wide. Full sun. Double Take™ Pink Storm Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa 'Pink Storm' PP20,920) - You'll do a double take when you see this Quince that looks like a Camellia. Double Take Pink Storm puts on a spectacular early season display of pink blooms. The large, double flowers are excellent in cut flower arrangements. Bright spring flowers are only the beginning of the Double Take Quince's appeal - they're also thornless, and do not produce fruit. Extremely drought tolerant once established, these early spring charmers are excellent landscape plants. Developed by Dr. Tom Ranney and his team at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research & Extension Center in beautiful North Carolina, they are sure to brighten spring landscapes across North America. 4-5 ft tall x wide.
