Winter Gardening Tips for Changing Weather with Pike Nurseries expert Melodie McDanal and Good Day anchor Gurvir Dhindsa. We have had an abnormally warm winter. With the quick change to colder temperatures this week, you may be confused about what to do in the garden to compensate. Here are a few tips from Pike Nurseries to keep your garden looking good - despite the changing temperatures! SEE TIPS BELOW FROM PIKE NURSERIES: • Plants Blooming Early o The warmer weather has caused some plants to start setting blooms! A hard frost could kill/damage those blooms. Some plants we’ve noticed that are almost blooming include:  Forsythia  Witch Hazel  Star Magnolias  Flowering Quince **Don’t feel the need to throw frost cloth out on all of your plants this early. It’s better to just water them in. It’s possible that you will lose spring and summer blooms this year, but the plant will not die. o If you have blooms before a freeze, enjoy them! Cut them and bring them indoors. • Water o If temperatures do continue to drop, here are a few tips to keep your winter color thriving:  Water, water, water: You should water containers before a hard freeze and after the freeze. The added moisture will allow the plants to tolerate the cold and bounce back to life.  Don’t worry if you’re plants are droopy the day after a deep freeze. Give them time and they will usually spring back to life! • Mulch o Mulching your garden will help it regulate temperature and keep the plant moist which we just learned is so important in protecting the plant. o Your garden should have a good 1-2 inch layer of mulch • Group o Group containers and houseplants together near your house or in a garage! This increases the temperature around them and decreases their exposure to cold wind. ion
