great idea!! lemme get this straight. you're planting a flowering bulb of some kind...? down inside the rootball of the spent hosta, or just closely along side it? say for example i wanted to plant a few asiatic lily bulbs to give the appearance that the flowering lily is coming from the hosta, would that work?
